When do you plant tulip bulbs?
Tulip bulbs are best planted between September and December, as long as the ground is not yet frozen. This ensures that the bulb gets enough winter cold. A tulip needs that cold period to grow well in the spring. Then plant the bulbs about 10 to 15 centimeters deep, with the point facing up, in a sunny spot in well-draining soil. When do tulips bloom?
Once planted, you naturally want to know exactly when the color will enter your garden! Tulips bloom from March to May, depending on the variety. Early tulips, such as single and double early varieties, poke their heads above ground in March. Then the Triumph tulips follow in April, and the late varieties such as double late and parrot tulips close the season in May.
Can you combine tulips in the garden?
Multiple colors of tulips or different types of flowers can create a playful look. Tulips can therefore be perfectly combined with other flower species. Think, for example, of daffodils and hyacinths, which bloom in the same period and together provide a real spring picture. Or combine early and late tulip varieties, then you will enjoy blooms from March until May. A lot is possible and that is exactly what makes the tulip so fun!
Tip from Brenda: Don't plant your tulip bulbs one by one throughout the border, but in groups of at least ten bulbs together. This way, you create a beautiful whole in your colorful garden!

Frequently asked questions about our tulip bulbs
How deep should I plant tulip bulbs?
Plant tulip bulbs about three times as deep as the bulb itself is high, usually about 10 to 15 centimeters. Always with the point facing up, and in well-draining soil, so that the bulb does not stand in water.
What do I do with tulips after they bloom?
Cut off the faded flower so that the plant does not put energy into seed formation, but leave the foliage until it turns yellow on its own. In that leaf, the bulb stores nutrients for next year's bloom.
Do tulips come back every year or do I have to buy new bulbs?
Tulips are officially perennial bulbs, but in practice, many cultivated varieties bloom less profusely the second year or do not come up at all. For the best result, plant them annually.
Can you plant tulips in a pot?
Tulips do fine in a pot, wonderful for your balcony or terrace. Use a pot about 25 centimeters deep with holes in the bottom, because tulips do not like wet feet. Feel free to put the bulbs closer together than in the garden; this will give you one cheerful bunch of color. With the lasagna method, you can combine tulips in the same pot with daffodils and crocuses.
When can you buy tulip bulbs?
When tulips are for sale depends mainly on where you buy them. But you can usually order tulip bulbs from the summer for the new planting season. With us, you can usually buy them as a pre-order!
When do you take tulip bulbs out of the ground?
You take tulip bulbs out of the ground as soon as the foliage has completely yellowed, usually in June. You do this by carefully digging next to the bulb with a small shovel and gently prying it out. Tip: do not pull on the foliage, as you will damage the bulb. Brush off the soil, let the bulbs dry for a few days, and then store them in a dry, dark, and cool place.
