The bulb size is the circumference of the bulb in centimeters, and it says a lot about the flowering. The larger the bulb, the more energy it has stored. This means a better chance of larger flowers. We therefore consciously choose large bulbs!

When to buy and plant an amaryllis bulb?

You can buy and plant amaryllis bulbs from October through December. After planting, it takes an average of about six to eight weeks for the first flower to open. Do you want your amaryllis to be in bloom for Christmas? Then plant the bulb by mid-November at the latest. If you plant the bulb later, it will bloom in January or February. Do you want color in your home all winter? Then buy a few bulbs at a time and plant them every two to three weeks!

Planting itself is simple. First, make a hole in the soil, then place the bulb in the ground and fill it in. Let the neck and about a third of the bulb protrude above the soil; this keeps the bulb dry so it won't rot. Then water once and place the bulb in a light, warm spot of around 20 degrees Celsius. Until you see green, the bulb needs almost no water.

How to extend the flowering of the amaryllis bulb

Is the amaryllis in bloom in a pot? Then place it in a slightly cooler spot and out of direct sunlight. The cooler temperature makes the flowers open more slowly and stay beautiful for longer. Turn the pot a quarter turn every few days so that the stem remains straight, and place a stake next to it if the flowers become heavy. You can enjoy the blooms for two to three weeks per stem.

Amaryllis bulbs are available for purchase from autumn until after the holidays, approximately from October through December. This is also the period in which you plant them. Those who order on time have the most choice in colors and varieties.

When do you plant an amaryllis for blooming at Christmas?

To have an amaryllis bloom for Christmas, plant it by mid-November at the latest. The bulb needs six to eight weeks to bloom. In a warm spot of around 20 degrees Celsius, it goes faster; in a cooler spot, it takes a bit longer.

Can an amaryllis grow without soil?

An amaryllis can bloom without soil, in water or in wax. In water, place the bulb on a glass such that only the roots hang in the water. An amaryllis in wax needs nothing at all and blooms on its own. In both cases, the bulb will bloom well once. If you want to keep it afterward, plant it in potting soil.

How long does an amaryllis bloom?

An amaryllis blooms for two to three weeks per stem. Because a large bulb often produces a second stem, you can enjoy the flowers for a total of four to six weeks. In a cool spot, out of direct sunlight, the flowers will stay beautiful the longest.

Does an amaryllis bulb return next year?
