Fleece fabric (also known as acrylic fabric or horticultural fleece) is a thin, lightweight, and water-permeable fabric made of polypropylene. In gardening and agriculture, it is primarily used to protect plants and crops against weather conditions and pests.

Main functions of fleece fabric

  • Frost protection: It creates a microclimate that protects vulnerable plants, shrubs, and young crops from night frost and cold winds in early spring or autumn.
  • Early harvesting: The heat trapped under the fabric causes the soil to warm up faster. This allows seeds to germinate earlier and crops to grow more quickly.
  • Protection against insects and birds: It keeps out harmful insects (such as the carrot fly or cabbage fly) and prevents birds from pecking at newly sown beds, without the need for chemical pesticides.
  • Light, air, and water-permeable: Unlike plastic film, fleece fabric breathes. Rainwater and sunlight pass straight through, ensuring the plants do not suffocate or dry out.

Application

Fleece fabric is laid loosely over the crops (like a 'floating' blanket) or stretched over hoops to form a tunnel. The edges are usually secured with ground pegs, stones, or sand to prevent it from blowing away.
