How are dahlias classified?

Dahlias are classified in several ways, which can sometimes make choosing a bit overwhelming. However, it's actually very logical once you understand how the system works.

The main classification is by flower shape. Internationally, dahlias are divided into official classes for this purpose, established by the National Dahlia Society (NDS). Additionally, you can also classify dahlias by height and color, for those who want to create a specific color palette with depth in their garden.

The dahlia officially has 14 types

Worldwide, there are over 57,000 registered cultivars. At Bulbs4You, you'll find 250 of these dahlias, carefully selected by us. This enormous variation has arisen from centuries of cross-breeding and selection, leading to flowers in every imaginable shape, size, and color. Naturally beautiful!

But to bring some structure to this, the National Dahlia Society has officially classified dahlias into 14 flower forms, also known as classes. Each class has its own characteristics: from the cactus dahlia to the pompon.

Which dahlia variety suits your garden?

To be honest, choosing from 250 beautiful varieties with all kinds of colors is not an easy task. Still, there are a few simple questions that will help you a long way:

  • How big is your outdoor space? Do you have room in a spacious border or are you dealing with ornamental grasses? Then you can go in any direction. Do you have pots on a patio or balcony? Then you'll want a compact, low-growing variety.
  • What do you want to do with them? Dahlias as cut flowers for a vase require long, straight stems. Do you want to make the garden shine? Then single dahlias or waterlily-types are often most attractive to bees and butterflies.
  • What atmosphere do you want to create? Do you want to be overwhelmed by color? Or would you prefer to keep it calm and atmospheric? That question determines what your garden or border will look like.

Combining different dahlia varieties in a border is definitely possible! This often yields the most beautiful results. For example, combine a tall decorative dahlia as an eye-catcher with low pompon dahlias in front.
