For spring flowering bulbs and spring plants, the planting period is from September to mid-December. It is important to plant these bulbs before the first frost. Take good care during the winter so that they will emerge healthy in the spring.
Summer flowering bulbs are best planted in the months of April and May. These bulbs do not like frost, so it is a good idea to plant them as soon as you know that frost is definitely behind them.
February is usually the perfect time to plant certain spring flowers that are a little more resistant to the cold. The following bulbs, among others, qualify:
- snowdrops
- crocuses
- daffodils
- grape hyacinths
This depends on the type of flower bulb. Annual flower bulbs bloom best in the first year. The following years the flowering becomes less. Perennial flower bulbs can bloom beautifully several years in a row.
Although a spent flower is no longer as beautiful as a flower in full bloom, it is wise to let the withered leaves (foliage) die out. Let nature do its work to get another beautiful flower from perennial bulbs next year.
