Step-by-step plan for planting dahlias

Unlike spring bloomers, dahlias are not flower bulbs but tubers. The elongated roots are dry and tuberous. Plant the tubers from April when there is no longer a chance of night frost. Planting dahlias is easy, but follow these steps for a beautiful result:

• Choose a sunny spot.
• Make sure the soil is well-drained.
• Dig a hole about 15 cm deep.
• Keep a distance of about 30 to 60 cm between each tuber.
• Place the tuber so that the old stem is just above the ground.
• Fill the hole with soil again and water thoroughly immediately.

Dahlia Care

After planting, good care is important. With a little attention, your dahlias will soon bloom beautifully.

O  Water regularly, especially during dry periods, but ensure the soil does not remain too wet to prevent root rot.

O  Cut away the top growing point once the plant has 3 or 4 pairs of leaves for a fuller plant.

O  Give some fertilizer every month for optimal growth.

O  Remove faded flowers to encourage new flowers to grow.

O  In the fall, after the first night frost, you can cut off the stems and dig up the tubers. Store them dry for the following year. This way your dahlias will continue to bloom every year.
